Neurodivergent Learners
For Grades 1-12
There will be review time offered at the end of the Day 1 and Day 2 sessions. It will involve students meeting with the NJ CAP facilitators one at a time to review their drawings from their workshop and to discuss anything that they want to share.
This CAP Curriculum has been researched and developed by a board-certified Behavior Analyst and an Advanced-Certified Autism Specialist to meet the needs of neurodivergent learners. The strategies of peer support, self-assertion and telling a trusted adult have been enhanced in this curriculums adaptations and modifications. Research has shown that neurodivergent individuals are at a higher risk of experiencing sexual assault compared to their neurotypical peers. This can be attributed to factors such as difficulties in understanding social cues, communication barriers, and challenges in recognizing and responding to dangerous situations.
A multi-sensory approach promotes a more inclusive and effective learning environment by providing opportunities for all participants to engage with the materials that best suits their individual needs and preferences. Content and activities can be generalized into speech and language sessions, behavior support sessions, and self-advocacy activities. A more detailed approach to our adaptations for neurodivergent learners includes the use of sign language, visual aids, and a momentary pause for mental clarity which we call brain breaks. Students who are nonverbal are encouraged to utilize their communication boards to participate in the workshop.
Neurodivergent Learners Program will involve two 60 minute sessions held on consecutive days. The majority of the sessions will focus on defining SAFE, STRONG and FREE, while also offering tools to students to recognize, communicate and express times when the environment is unsafe, not strong and not free.
